The Burden of Blindness in Swaziland Here are some numbers on eye diseases in Eswatini, a country of 1.3 million people: 1. Cataract: n= 5000 cataract BLIND, 20. 000 operable 2. Glaucoma: n= 10. 000, of which many blind 3. 180 Children blind, (n= Cataract and Glaucoma 36, ROP 45, Scar 4, Others 95 according to WHO extrapolations) 4. Diabetic Retinopathy: n= 8000, of which 500 need laser per year
In 2003 we did a community rapid assessment of Cataract blindness in Eswatini and found the following:
1. Cataracts cause 50% of all blindness 2. Only 20% of cataract blind have had surgery 3. The principal barriers to accessing surgery are lack of finances and of knowledge about available treatment
