Poor Vision
Gradual vision loss can have several causes, most commonly glaucoma and cataract.

                                                    Cataract

Typical complaints of cataract are blurry vision and fading of colours. This is caused by the lens inside the eye becoming blurry, which gives the pupil a typical white appearance. Cataract typically progresses slowly to cause vision loss and can potentially become blinding. The condition usually affects both eyes, but almost always one eye is affected earlier than the other.

The Good Shepherd Eye Clinic is equipped to treat this condition. With a small surgery we can remove the cataract and place a clear lens back in order to improve the vision.

                                                   Glaucoma

This eye disease is caused by a high pressure inside the eye, which damages the nerve in the back of the eye. The nerve transports signals from the eye to the brain, therefore damage to this nerve results in vision loss.  At first the vision loss goes unnoticed because it starts in the periphery of the visual field. This results in shrinking of the visual field leading to 'tunnel vision'. Only once the disease is far advanced it affects the central vision.

This process can be stopped by lowering the pressure with treatment that can consist of eye drops, laser treatment or surgery. Treatment can prevent you from going blind; it is therefore very important that you visit an eye doctor when you notice that your vision is getting worse. The Good Shepherd Eye Clinic is equipped to treat this condition.
